Arguably the biggest and most empowering girl group of the 90s was the Spice Girls. Between their unique personalities that gave everyone something to relate to, or their strong messages of “Girl Power”, we all grew up wanting to be just like them.

The Spice Girls are pretty fantastic, that’s obvious, but there is a lot of things we don’t actually know about them. We were all so young when they came out and it wasn’t like the internet was a thing so we couldn’t get all the details we can now!

1. The band was formed after a casting call was put in a magazine in 1993

The listed read “”R.U. 18-23 with the ability to sing/dance. R.U. streetwise, outgoing, ambitious and dedicated?” Mel B sang the Whitney Houston song “The Greatest Love of All” for her audition, Victoria sang a song from Cabaret and Mel C rocked out to the Pointer Sisters.

2. The band had different names and a different 5th member.

Geri, Mel C, Mel B and Victoria were cast in the band “Touch” with Michelle Stephenson. Stevenson had to leave because of a family illness, but luckily the second casting brought in Emma Bunton who Victoria had actually already met.

3. They paid off their original management to go out on their own

After being given a contract they didn’t like they decided to go their own way. They took out a loan to pay off the managers and went to find their own representation who would let them be more like themselves.

4. They didn’t come up with their own nicknames

After signing with Simon Fuller they were interviewed by Top of the Pops magazine. The writer of the feature picked them out for the article and they stuck.

5. Emma taught the girls karate

She was trained in karate because his mom was an instructor so for the Say You’ll Be There video she taught the other girls the proper ways to kick and punch.

6. The video for Viva Forever had to be animated

Otherwise, it wouldn’t have gotten made! The girls were simply too busy to make the video at the time.

7. Nelson Mandela was a HUGE fan

When he met them he fell in love with them all. He got to see them again at a charity concert in South Africa. He actually said the is was “the second greatest moment in my life. The greatest was the first time that I met them.” He has also called them his “heroes” and the girls all loved him.

8. They never actually won a Grammy

Even though people know who they are worldwide, they never were awarded a Grammy. Oh well, they have sold over 80 million records so I am sure they are just fine!

9. Two of the girls had kids within two weeks of each other

Mel B had her first child, Phoenix Chi just 13 days before Victoria had her son Brooklyn.

10. Wannabe was shot in one take

The girls shot the music video in the Midland Grand Hotel in London. It was apparently very cold in there so they did not want to do it more than once. The producers apparently hated how it turned out but it won an MTV VMA in 1997 so obviously, it was perfect as is.

11. They had their first live arena show in Istanbul

Just before they were about to go on Geri told the girls she was scared. Victoria replied “Don’t worry. They’re only here to see your big hair and your big boobs.” So comforting. Fun fact: you could buy a concert tape of this on VHS! I know because I owned it. It was great.

12. One of the Spice Girls pinched a royal’s bum

It was Geri. Ginger Spice herself got a little bit handsy with Prince Charles and gave him a little pinch.

13. The Union Jack dress was Geri’s design

It was just a plain black dress but she decided to jazz it up with the flag. The stylist was worried it would be offensive so they sewed on the peace sign on the back.

14. Mel C essentially has Girl Power tattooed on her

The Japenese symbols on her arms apparently mean “woman” and “strength”.

15. The girls didn’t believe Geri had actually left the band

The last thing she said to them was “I’m gonna say bye now, girls,” after they got off a private jet. The final straw that led her to leave the band was the fact that she couldn’t attend a breast cancer charity event. The rest of the band thought she would come back so in their TV appearance they said she was sick.

Luckily all our ladies are still friends and some are even planning a reunion in celebration of the 20th anniversary. While not all the girls will be there, it’s nice that they are all still friends. I mean, Victoria and Emma are the godmothers of Geri’s child for goodness sake! That’s real friendship!
